The WhoSampled iPhone App is Here!

WhoSampled iPhone App

It’s finally here! We’re very proud to announce the release of the WhoSampled iPhone app. The app is the result of many months of hard work, and we believe we’ve created something truly special for music fans worldwide.

Scan Your Music Library to Discover its DNA

In the WhoSampled app, your music discovery journey starts with your own music collection. This is where the magic happens. The app scans your music library and automatically shows you all of the sample, cover and remix connections for the artists and tracks in it. Just by doing this, you’ll discover incredible connections for the music you already know and love. Additionally, we’ve created a “Now Playing” feature, where you can double-tap from your music player to the WhoSampled app to discover all the musical connections for the song you’re listening to right now.

Optimised for Mobile Access

For all of you who have been using our service for a while, you’d know that we take utmost pride in the quality and comprehensiveness of our data. The database will very soon hit 150,000 tracks from 54,000 artists – an incredible feat considering the level of detail and accuracy that goes into every entry. In order to allow quick and easy access to all this rich data from a mobile device, we needed to get the design right. So we created a beautiful, clean and slick interface that has a simple and intuitive design that makes music exploration easy, with all information being interlinked and tappable.

As always, you can compare tracks side-by-side and listen to full‐length tracks streamed through YouTube, DailyMotion and SoundCloud. You get highly detailed information on any sample (sample timing, sample type, part sampled), as well as contextual recommendations (“You Might Also Like”) that can take your discovery journey to new and unexpected places. You can also engage with the WhoSampled community from within the app by commenting and rating, and then share your amazing finds with your Facebook friends and Twitter followers.

But that’s not all…

Cool New Features

The icing on the cake are some new features that are available in the app for the first time ever. We’ve added deep and unique music charts that show you trending and top-rated content as well as the all-time most influential artists and tracks. Some of this information can be found on the site, but the app’s ‘Charts’ section is more detailed than ever. Further to that, we’ve added the ability to maintain a personal favorites list, so you can add any sample, cover or remix you come across to your list of favorites for future reference.

In short, this is an essential, unique music discovery app that no serious music fan should be without.

We wanted to make sure the app is beautiful, and ad-free. So for an introductory price of less than a cup of coffee ($2.99 / €2.39 / £1.99 …), you’re getting our fully featured, ad-free, premium app experience. But hurry up – we won’t be able to keep this low price forever!

And what about Android and other platforms? That’s all in our pipeline, but first we need to make the iPhone app a success. So even if you don’t have an iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch, but know people who do and might enjoy our app, please tell them about it!

We truly hope you’ll enjoy using the app as much as we enjoyed developing it. WhoSampled is now personalised to your taste, and you can take it everywhere. ‘Nuff said.

The app is compatible with any iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 4.2 and upwards.

Awesome. But what about a free version?

We don’t have any immediate plans for a free version. Even if we ever release one, it will be ad-supported and with reduced functionality. So if you like our app, we strongly recommend getting the version that is available now to make sure you always have our premium experience in your pocket.

I was curious if you all would develop this for the mac itself. While it’s amazing having my iphone library analyzed, I really want to scan my ENTIRE library which does not fit on my iphone. Is there any way of doing this or are there any plans of developing this for mac?

We might develop something that would allow you to scan your entire library in the future. For now, we understand from users of the app that it’s possible to extend its reach beyond the music that is on the phone by using iTunes Match, so you might want to consider that.
